What does Lipid Profile mean?
Jun 04, 2020
Get a Lipid Profile to keep a tab on your cholesterol.
The lipid profile test is a type of blood test used to determine the risk of developing heart diseases.
What are Lipids?
In order to understand the lipid profile better, it is important to first understand what lipids are. Lipids are fats or fatty acids that make up the cell membrane and are also a source of energy for your body. But an excess amount of lipids can cause high blood cholesterol which leads to heart blockages, heart attacks and strokes. Hence, to avoid these health issues, it is important to monitor your lipid levels regularly and take appropriate action as required.
What is Lipid Profile used for?
The lipid profile is basically a test for cholesterol. It is used to assess an individual’s risk of developing cardiac problems. The results of a lipid profile help decide further treatment to be prescribed if the risk of heart diseases is high.
What does a Lipid Profile include?
A lipid profile typically tests the following:
- Total cholesterol
It measures the total cholesterol in all lipoprotein particles which are molecular formations of fat. These particles allow lipids to flow through your bloodstream.
- High-Density Lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C)
The Lipid Profile test measures the high-density lipoprotein particles or cholesterol in the blood stream. This type is referred to as ‘good cholesterol’ as it aids to get rid of excess bad cholesterol andtoxins from your body.
- Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C)
The test calculates the amount of low-density lipoprotein particles or cholesterol. This form of cholesterol is called ‘bad cholesterol’. It causes cardiovascular issues by lining the walls of blood vessels and creating blockages in your heart.
- Triglycerides
The test evaluates the extent of triglycerides in your blood. Triglycerides are a type of stored or unutilized fat that you accumulate from consuming food. Eating too much sugar, high calorie food and alcohol results in the formation of triglycerides, which can cause heart disorders.
Recommended Frequency of Lipid Profile Test
If you’re a healthy adult with no major risk factors for heart diseases, it is recommended that you do a lipid test at least once in four years. However, if you are at a risk or have had past issues with high cholesterol, it is recommended that you get tested at least once in three months. You’re considered at risk if even one of the following conditions applies to you-
Smoking
Obesity
Unhealthy lifestyle
50 years of age or above
A family or personal history of heart diseases or diabetes.
If you are already undergoing medication for controlling your cholesterol, you need to take the test after every three months to monitor your progress.
As per the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), even children between the ages of 9 and 11 should be tested at least once.
