Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Ferritin estimation is useful in the diagnosis of iron deficiency anemia and iron overload. Increased levels seen in cases of hemachromatosis, alcoholic liver disease, and those undergoing frequent blood transfusions with packed RBCs. Decreased levels seen in those experiencing heavy menstrual bleeding, poor absorption of iron, iron deficiency anemia, and long-term GI bleeding. Ferritin is an acute-phase reactant and may increase during inflammation, chronic infection, liver disease, auto-immune disorders, and certain types of cancer. Ferritin estimation is not used to detect or monitor these conditions.
