Chikungunya is a viral infection transmitted through the bite of an infected Aedes Aegypti mosquito. The symptoms are often clinically indistinguishable from those observed in dengue fever but unlike dengue fever, hemorrhagic manifestations are rare. A negative result can occur if the quantity of IgM present in the sample is below the detection limit of the assay. Samples containing unusually high titres of heterophile antibodies or rheumatoid factor may affect the excepted results. The results of this test should be interpreted in conjunction with other diagnostic procedures and clinical findings.
