Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Anticardiolipin antibodies (ACA) belong to the group of antiphospholipid antibodies that are frequently found in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus and also in patients with other rheumatic diseases. Cardiolipin antibodies are useful in identifying patients with an increased risk of thrombosis, recurrent spontaneous abortions and phospholipid antibody syndrome (APS). The cardiolipin IgA isotype is usually detected with either IgG or IgM isotypes in patients with APS. In patients with collagen disease, IgA associates with thrombocytopenia skin ulcers and vasculitis, indicating a patient subgroup at risk for specific clinical manifestations.
