Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

The Indirect Coombs Test is used for detection of alloantibodies or autoantibodies directed against red blood cell antigens in the settings of pre-transfusion testing. The ICT is positive in the presence of serum alloantibodies in patients previously transfused and immunized against non-self red cell antigens. A positive ICT requires further investigation to identify more precisely the offending antibody. The ICT may be unable to detect low titre antibodies.
