Islet cells are located in the pancreas and are critical to keeping blood sugar in check by producing the hormone insulin. Antibodies against these can result in decreased or stoppin of insulin production leading to Type 1 Diabetes. This test is helpful in assessing the risk of onset of Type-1 diabetes.

Anti-pancreatic Islet cell antibodies (ICA) are detected in Insulin Dependent Diabetes mellitus (70-80%), Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults (LADA-50-75%), close relatives of affected patients (5-10%) & in Autoimmune gestational diabetes. Antibody titres are linked to beta cell destruction and decrease within the first year of the disease. Detection of antibodies in unaffected relatives is associated with progression to Diabetes in the future.
