Genexpert Test TB Diagnosis and Resistance testing

Genexpert is a new test for rapid diagnosis of TB and drug resistance. The test is very fast and fully automated, detecting acid fast bacilli and drug resistance to rifampicin in less than 2 hours, as compared to standard cultures which detect growth in 3 to 5 weeks and an additional 3 weeks for drug resistance.

Genexpert MTB/RIF Assay: The instrument comes with a disposable cartridge. A sample from a suspected TB patient is collected and is mixed with the reagent. The cartridge containing this mixture is then placed in the Genexpert machine for testing.

Why is the test performed?

The test is performed to ensure rapid diagnosis of TB for patients who need immediate treatment because the results from culture tests and drug sensitivity testing may take nearly 4 to 5 weeks to come. Rather than waiting too long for results, the Genexpert ensures rapid results for patients, saving both cost and time.

When is the test ordered?

The test is very rapid, sensitive and specific for detecting TB and antibiotic resistance. When a physician suspects TB in a patient and wants rapid diagnosis to initiate effective drug treatment, he or she may order Genexpert test.

How is the sample collected?

A sputum sample is collected from the patient's body.

How to prepare for the test?

No special preparations are required for the test.
