Toxoplasma gondii is a parasite which causes toxoplasmosis in which the infection acquired by a woman during pregnancy can be transmitted to the fetus and lead to severe manifestations of congenital infections, like blindness, loss of hearing, etc. To reduce the chances of congenital toxoplasmosis, regular screening for T. gondii IgG and IgM antibodies in all pregnant women is to be done. IgG antibodies are useful for indicating past or active infection with Toxoplasma gondii and IgM antibodies help in the diagnosis of congenital or acute acquired Toxoplasmosis.
