This test is used to diagnose acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL), a type of acute myeloid leukemia (AML). This helps in monitoring the treatment of APL or for leukemia cells that remain after the treatment. PML RARA is an abnormal gene sequence responsible for acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL). PML/RARA may be present in a karyotype as t(15;17)(q21;q22).
