5 Causes of Infertility
Jun 04, 2020
If you really want to have a child but are unable to conceive in spite of having unprotected sex several times for at least a year, you are not alone. This is a condition termed as infertility. It may be the result of a combination of several factors, including some issue with you or your partner. After several failed attempts, it can get really distressing, and many people blame themselves or feel ashamed that they are not able to bring a child into this world.
How do you recognise infertility?
The most obvious indicator, of course, is the inability to get pregnant. The condition does not have any other symptoms, other than irregular periods in women (sometimes) and signs of hormonal problems in men (rarely). If you have been trying and failing to conceive for a year at least, visit your doctor.
But worry not, because this is definitely not a helpless situation. Safe and effective therapies can show you the way out of this block and place you in a better position to get pregnant. Many couples may later conceive even without treatment.
However, isn’t it a better option to stop it in its tracks even before it arrives and makes your life difficult? Yes, infertility can be caused by poor lifestyle choices, affecting both males and females equally.
Causes of infertility
Unhealthy eating
Binging on junk food and overeating cause weight problems, which in turn lead to fertility problems. Eating too much junk at once can cause your blood sugar to spike, and since insulin is said to have a connection to fertility, it may have a negative impact on your fertility health.
Alcoholism and smoking
Heavy drinking can reduce healthy sperm count in men, and can delay conception in women. Smoking can increase the risk of problems with fallopian tubes, ectopic pregnancy, cervical changes, egg damage, and miscarriage. It decreases the quality of semen and causes abnormality in hormone levels. If you already have fertility issues, this can take you right over to the side of infertility.
Unsafe sex
Engaging in unprotected sex can give rise to sexually transmitted diseases like chlamydia and gonorrhoea which may lead to pelvic inflammatory disease. This, in turn, causes infertility problems in women. While men show symptoms of STDs immediately and can get treatment right away, women are not so lucky. Thus, the infection can stay in women for a long time, damaging their reproductive system.
Being overweight
Obesity can lead to problems in sperm production and decreased sex drive in men. Women who are overweight have trouble with hormone production. It can prevent normal ovulation and make pregnancy difficult to achieve.
Too much exercise
Yes, you read that right. Exercise is extremely important, but overdoing it can harm the fertility of both men and women. Working out too much – more than an hour a day – can harm your fertility health.
While medical causes require a doctor’s attention and treatment, these lifestyle habits are in your hands. Of course, it can be difficult to break a bad habit, but the result is worth all the effort.
If infertility issues still persist in spite of taking utmost care, it is best to consult a doctor right away. A proper diagnosis made in time can prove to be your saviour. For authentic diagnostic tests approach a well-known and trusted organisation like Apollo Diagnostics.
