The level of Ferritin is used to determine the iron stores in a patient. Iron depletion can cause the lowering of the serum ferritin level. The test can be used to differentiate between anaemia due to deficiency of iron or anaemia as a chronic disease. The test also helps in determining conditions such as Haemochromatosis which is caused by excessive iron content.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Ferritin estimation is useful in the diagnosis of iron deficiency anemia and iron overload. Increased levels seen in cases of hemachromatosis, alcoholic liver disease, and those undergoing frequent blood transfusions with packed RBCs. Decreased levels seen in those experiencing heavy menstrual bleeding, poor absorption of iron, iron deficiency anemia, and long-term GI bleeding. Ferritin is an acute-phase reactant and may increase during inflammation, chronic infection, liver disease, auto-immune disorders, and certain types of cancer. Ferritin estimation is not used to detect or monitor these conditions.
